The kind of artist that will bring the fanboy out of you. Robbi Rodriguez (no relation) succesfully sinthethizes a cartoony style (that thankfully doesn´t look like Madureira) and strong dramatic lighting.
Talk about an artist that takes risks. Some of his characters seem more influenced by Disney than the mainstream comic books in the shelves. Within the frame of an action / drama story, Robbi Rodriguez makes it work nicely.
With agile digital brushstrokes, the dynamism of Rodriguez´s pages flow so naturally, he can deliver a 15 panel page that reads perfectly without sacrificing a bit of drama. He also mixes some graytones, and hatching confidently for more dimension, as he achieves a dark chiaroscuro atmosphere. Outstanding.
The result is one of the most appealing graphic proposals you´ll find here in DA. With over 43,500 profile views he has a lot of us waiting for his next deviation. An artist capable of making you wonder how will he interpret your favorite character, Rodriguez can deliver intriguing images that transcend it´s own paper and ink nature. They´re declarations of the character´s identity translated to graphic form.
He´s also a writer. His upcoming GN, "Frankie Get Your Gun" is inspired in 70´s revenge films ("They call her one eye", "I spit on your grave" perhaps?) so you can expect gut wrenching scenes and a gratuitous final pay back. You can see some promos and pages already!
Do yourselves a favor, and go check his work. Odds are, you´ll find yourself marching in the growing legion of RR´s followers...
... and love every minute of it.
